Park City, Utah (January 26, 2023) – The United States will be well represented at the International Ski Federation’s (FIS) Junior World Championships for Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined in February. USA Nordic Sport (USANS) has named a team of 15 athletes to compete in the events from February 1-5, 2023, in Whistler, Canada.
Four men and four women qualified to represent Team USA in Ski Jumping. It will be the fourth Junior Worlds appearance for Erik Belshaw (Steamboat Springs, Colo.), the second for Tate Frantz (Lake Placid, N.Y.) and Maxim Glyvka (Fox River Grove, Ill.), and the second appearance for Josie Johnson (Park City, Utah).
Five men and two women qualified to represent Team USA in Nordic Combined. It will be the fifth Junior Worlds appearance for Niklas Malacinski (Steamboat Springs, Colo.), the fourth for Evan Nichols (Lyme, N.H.), as well as the third for Carter Brubaker (Anchorage, AK) and second for Caleb Zuckerman (Norwich, Vt.). For Women’s Nordic Combined, Tess Arnone (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) will make her fifth Junior Worlds appearance and Alexa Brabec (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) will make her fourth.
“We have a team with chances to win both individually, and in team events. If they are able to keep up the great Ski Jumping they have shown in the past month, we would be satisfied,” said Men’s and Women’s Ski Jumping Head Coach, Tore Sneli. “It’s alway a hard fight at the top, but I believe Erik Belshaw could have some great results, if he has a good day and the conditions are fair.”
“I’m really excited for this Women’s Ski Jumping team to compete at the FIS Junior World Championships and represent Team USA. It’s a very young team, and we have three athletes who are competing at their first-ever Junior Worlds,” said USA Nordic Men’s and Women’s Ski Jumping Coach, Anders Johnson. “Adeline Swanson and Sandra Sproch have had really great results in this year’s domestic competitions, and I’m looking forward to see how they both do in their first-ever FIS events. This will be Josie Johnson’s second Junior Worlds, and she has proven that she can be competitive on the international stage.”
“We are proud to have five men represent the United States and USA Nordic at the Junior World Championships in Whistler, Canada,” said Men’s Nordic Combined Team Director, Nick Hendrickson. “We have some junior veterans returning to the Championships, and we also have an athlete competing in his first Junior World Championships. It will be great to have all of the athletes performing at their highest level, as I know they have been specifically training for this event in North America.”
“Competing against the best in the world and representing the United States is something all of our athletes have dreamed about since they were little kids,” said USA Nordic Sport CEO Adam Provost. “This will be an event that they will remember for a long time. I’m proud of the team’s (Nordic Combined and Ski Jumping) development over the last few months and expect many personal bests next week in Whistler.”
