Below you can find a compilation of Mother’s Day notes written by our athletes. The takeaway, our athletes have some incredible mom’s and today we get to celebrate them. Happy Mother’s Day from USA Nordic!
It is common to see a parent sacrifice everything to raise a kid, but Bryan and myself had someone go the extra distance for decades to give us the best shot at becoming who we are today. Our mother Penny, is a pure saint with the hell that she had to go through so we could follow our passion. The hundred of thousands of dollars that were put forth to get us tickets, equipment, food, clothing are just a portion. Early on in Bryan’s life, he was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Not only did she work constantly to get him through cancer treatments in Denver, she also kept enrolling him in the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports club so he could find the joy. Then right during Bryan’s diagnoses, a little terrorist came along. Bryan and I are four years apart, four years to watch what he did and make those problems more profound and cause more trouble as a young child. The constant fear she went through when Bryan encouraged me or essentially threw me off the roof of the house into the snow may have caused some grey hairs early on. Then came all the waiting in the Howelsen hill parking lot, she would eventually drag us off the ski trails by our ears so we would go home and eat dinner. The fact that she did most of this on her own was amazing. When we both eventually moved out to train in Park City, I am sure she missed having our energy in the house, but at the same time the peace and quiet must have been nice.
She has always supported us and pushed us to be the best, even when we didn’t know if we could do it. She made sure we were up for the fight and was always a phone call away if we needed to talk.
Love you mom!
Bryan and Taylor.
My mom is one of the strongest, kindest, most loving people I know. Everyone who meets her loves her! My mom is one of my best friends and I don’t know what I would do without her! She always has a smile on her face and she never fails to put one on my face too. She is one of the most special, caring, generous, loving people ever! Happy mothers day!

My mom, Nancy, is my idol, my mentor, my best fan, my biggest critic and a genuine friend. I am so thankful for her strong athletic mindset and the memories we have shared together around the world. There is no one in this world that can compare to the companionship that we share. I am truly grateful everyday I get to spend with her in the kitchen, on the trails, and sharing good food.

I am so thankful for my mom and how supportive she has been of my whole career. From driving with me to Park City when I was younger to traveling to Fort Leonard Wood to watch me graduate last summer, she has always been fully supportive of my passions!

This is my mom Julie, and I want to thank her for all of her love and support in helping me follow my dreams of skiing at the highest level. She has not only supported myself but also has given back, like many of our parents, to the sports of Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined; by doing the hard work of entries and punching numbers during the competitions – which can lead to longer days and nights than people might think.
Happy Mother’s day Mom, I’m glad to have you!
Love, Grant
My mom has always been extremely supportive of everything I do. I know she wishes she could be there at every single competition to watch, but even when she isn’t there in person I know she’s watching or looking at results and she is always the first person I have a text from after an event. My mom and I live in different places, but we’ve made it a habit of having hour-long phone calls at least once a week, even if there isn’t anything important to talk about.
Thanks, Mom! I love you! – Jared Shumate
This picture was taken after my Mom skied the Birkie in -10 degree weather (not including wind chill). She is definitely the toughest skier in the family. I’ve been very fortunate to grow up and admire how hard my mom works at everything in her life. She is a wonder women.
Happy Mother’s Day Mom!

My mom Sharon has always been the best mother and my biggest supporter. She has always helped me achieve my biggest accomplishments and encourages me to do my best and push my limits of what I think is possible. She supports me everyday and is always there for me to talk to even when we are in different time zones. Sharon is the best mom someone could ask for! I love you mom.
