Planica, Slovenia (February 23, 2023) – The 2023 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships kicked-off today in Planica, as Women’s Ski Jumping took the hill for the Individual HS100 Event. Annika Belshaw and Paige Jones represented the United States, as Belshaw was able to come away with a new World Championships personal best.
Qualification for the HS100 World Championship was held on Wednesday, February 22nd. Belshaw was the first to qualify, as she jumped to 85.0 meters for 94.3 points, landing her in 32nd place. Jones followed in 35th, as she was able to put together an 83.0 meter jump for 90.7 points. Josie Johnson was one spot out of qualification in 41st, notching an 82.0 meter jump for 86.8 points. Sam Macuga was close to qualifying as well, finishing the day 46th overall, after going 76.5 meters for 78.1 points.
During the first round of competition in the HS100 World Championship, Belshaw put together an 85.0 meter jump for 95.2 points. Belshaw was unable to advance to the final round, but notched a new World Championships personal best, placing 31st overall. Jones was close behind in 38th place, after jumping to 84.0 meters for 87.8 points in the first round.
“Overall, I’m very proud of the girls. I think that they were expecting a little bit more, but they had solid jumps at a very high competition level,” said USA Nordic Men’s and Women’s Ski Jumping Coach, Anders Johnson. “It was a very close competition, where the difference between thirty-first and being in the top ten was only a few meters. They did a great job, it’s never easy competing at World Championships and I hope they take it as a learning experience. I’m excited to see what they’ll accomplish in the team and large hill events.”
Women’s Ski Jumping will be back on the hill this Saturday, February 25th, as they will compete in the Team HS100 Event. The competition will be streamed on skiandsnowboard.live, with the first jumper taking the hill at 11:00am EST.
