Planica, Slovenia (February 24, 2023) – The first Nordic Combined competition was held today at the 2023 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Planica, Slovenia. Annika Malacinski and Alexa Brabec represented the United States in the Women’s Nordic Combined HS100/5km Event, as Malacinski was able to come away with a new World Championships personal best.
Starting the day off on the hill, Malacinski was able to card a 77.0 meter jump for 69.7 points, placing her in 25th place for the start of the 5km race. Brabec followed in 31st place, after going 69.0 meters for 50.1 points.
Later in the day, during the 5km race, both Malacinski and Brabec were able to cover some ground. Malacinski skied up from 25th place, finishing 22nd overall with a course time of 15:31.1, notching a new World Championships personal best. Brabec then moved up from 31st, finishing the 5km race in 15:06.5, to end the day in 28th place.
“This is our second time competing at World Championships for Women’s Nordic Combined. I think that it’s so great that the level of competition continues to improve, and it was so cool to see three different nations on the podium today,” said USA Nordic Athlete, Annika Malacinski. “The conditions today were very tough, but I gave it my all and I’m excited to see what we can do in the mixed team event on Sunday.”
“It wasn’t the best day on the hill for us, but both girls skied a very great race,” said Women’s Nordic Combined Head Coach, Tomas Matura. “Both Annika and Alexa were able to ski up, and Annika was able to record a new World Championships personal best. I’d like to extend a special thank you to our ski technicians for their hard work, and for providing us with great skis for the race.”
Malacinski and Brabec will be back in action this Sunday, February 26th, as they will compete in the Mixed Team HS100/4x5km Event with Men’s Nordic Combined. The competition will be streamed on skiandsnowboard.live, with the first jumper taking the hill at 4:30am EST.
