Planica, Slovenia (March 3, 2023) – Men’s Ski Jumping competed in the Individual HS138 Event earlier today at the 2023 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships. Casey Larson, Decker Dean and Erik Belshaw were able to qualify, and represented the United States during Men’s Ski Jumping’s final individual competition in Planica. Belshaw was able to advance to the final round, earning a 26th place finish, with Larson and Dean recording new Large Hill World Championship personal bests.
Dean was the first athlete to qualify for the United States on March 2nd, as he went 122.5 meters for 103.6 points, placing 39th overall. Belshaw was next up, throwing down the longest jump of the day from the athletes competing for the United States. Belshaw put together a 127.0 meter jump for 120.4 points, landing him in 23rd place. Larson was the final athlete to qualify, as he was able to jump to 119.5 meters for 101.0 points, finishing 40th overall. Andrew Urlaub also competed in the HS138 Qualification, but was disqualified after his jump.
During the HS138 World Championship, Dean was the first athlete from the United States to take the hill. Dean recorded a 120.5 meter jump for 104.4 points, as he placed 39th overall, recording a new personal best finish. Larson was next up, as he jumped to 120.0 meters, tallying 105.5 points and a 36th overall finish, which is also a new personal best. Both Dean and Larson were unable to advance to the final round of competition. Belshaw was next up, going 126.0 meters for 118.7 points, as he was able to earn a spot in the final round. In the final round, Belshaw bested his first jump, as he went 127.5 meters for 118.9 points, finishing the day 26th overall.
“It’s been a very fun experience this year at World Championships,” said USA Nordic Athlete, Eric Belshaw. “I was very grateful for the support that I was receiving from my teammates, and I’m really looking forward to the team event tomorrow.”
“All the guys showed up today and gave their best,” said Men’s and Women’s Ski Jumping Coach, Trevor Edlund. “Erik was able to put together a great performance with two good jumps, and it was very exciting to see him compete in the final round. It’s been great to see all of our guys competing with the best in the world every event, trying to earn top-thirty finishes.”
Men’s Ski Jumping will be back in action tomorrow, as they will compete in the Team HS138 Event. This will be the final competition of the 2023 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships for Men’s Ski Jumping, with the first athlete taking the hill at 10:30am EST. The Team HS138 Event will be streamed on skiandsnowboard.live.
