Planica, Slovenia (March 1, 2023) – Men’s Nordic Combined competed in the Team HS138/4x5km Event earlier today at the 2023 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Planica. Ben Loomis, Jared Shumate, Niklas Malacinski and Stephen Schumann represented the United States, placing 8th overall.
Starting the day off on the HS138, Malacinski was the first jumper on the hill for the United States. Malacinski was able to record the longest jump of the day for the team, going 120.0 meters for 92.5 points. Schumann followed, as he went 101.0 meters for 67.2 points. Shumate was next up, jumping to 103.5 meters for 76.3 points. Loomis was the fourth and final jumper, putting together the second best jump of the day for the team, going 113.0 meters for 100.9 points. The foursome was able to earn 336.9 total points, placing them 9th overall and +2:21 behind first place for the start of the 4x5km race.
Later in the day, during the 4x5km relay race, the team was able to cover some ground. Schumann got things started, recording the second fastest course time of the day on the team, as he finished the 5km in 12:10.8. Loomis was next up, as he finished his 5km leg in 12:15.1. Malacinski was then able to pass the athlete from the Czech Republic in front of him, putting his team in 8th place with a 5km time of 12:34.1. Shumate held the 8th position, recording the fastest course time of the day for his team at 12:02.6. The 8th place finish by the foursome bested their performance at the World Championships in Oberstdorf in 2021, where they placed 9th overall.
Men’s Nordic Combined will be back in action on Saturday, March 4th, as they will compete in the HS138/10km Event. This will be the final event of the 2023 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships for Loomis, Shumate, Malcinski and Schumann. The competition will be streamed on skiandsnowboard.live, with the first jumper taking the hill at 4:30am EST.
