Planica, Slovenia (March 4, 2023) – Men’s Nordic Combined competed in the HS138/10km Event earlier today at the 2023 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships. Ben Loomis, Jared Shumate, Niklas Malacinski and Stephen Schumann represented the United States during Men’s Nordic Combined’s final competition in Planica.
Starting off the day on the hill, Malacinski was the first athlete to jump for the United States, as he went 111.0 meters for 83.2 points, placing him 37th overall. Schumann was next up, putting together a 105.0 meter jump for 70.5 points, as he finished 43rd overall. Shumate then went 107.5 meters for 76.4 points, as he placed 40th overall. Loomis finished things off, notching the longest jump of the day out of the athletes from the United States, going 115.5 meters for 89.1 points, placing him 33rd overall for the start of the 10km race.
Later in the day, during the 10km race, Loomis was able to ski up from the 33rd position, finishing 31st overall (24:55.7). The 31st overall finish by Loomis tied his Large Hill/10km personal best that he set in Oberstdorf in 2021. Malacinski placed 38th overall, finishing the 10km course in 25:43.5. Schumann was close behind in 39th, as he skied up from the 43rd position, posting the fastest course time of the day out of all the United States athletes (25:11.7). Shumate rounded things off for the team in 40th, finishing his 10km in 25:45.8.
Men’s Nordic Combined will be back in action next week, as they will compete in their final World Cup events of the season in Oslo, Norway, from March 8-12.
