National Girls & Women in Sport Day on February 3 recognized the accomplishments and contributions of female athletes. Next week, Logan Sankey, in her second World Championships, has an opportunity to fly farther in the debut of women on the large hill. This is her story of women in sport and her aspiration to ‘be like her!’
I WANT TO BE LIKE HER
by Logan Sankey @logan.sankey
I want to be like her. I want to be strong like her, brave like her, ground-breaking like her, record-shattering like her, resilient like her. I want to like all the amazing women in sports who have come before me. It doesn’t matter how you got started or where you end up, sports, and the women you have the privilege of working with along the way, will teach you so much.
I’ve learned how to face my fears, work hard and smart, listen to my body, and collaborate as a team not just through skiing alone, but through direct teaching and indirect observation of the women around me.
If you are a girl or woman in sports reading this then I want to be like you. Because taken together, we are more than just the sum of our parts, we learn and grow and push forward and I can’t wait to see what we accomplish together.
I WANT TO BE LIKE HER
Here are some of the women I have trained and competed with throughout the years. Some have come and gone, but no matter how long or short they were in the sport for, I look up to all of them for different reasons.
