Former USST Nordic Combined Athlete & Head Coach
I love reading all these stories every year and am embarrassed that I have not submitted one story yet. 2018 was the first Olympics since 1988 that I wasn’t at Olympic Trials, competing in the games as an athlete or as a coach. I would not trade my experience as an athlete and coach for anything. I am grateful to everyone who helped me and the team along the way. As a program we would not have achieved such world class results without the support of the community.
I guess the main reason I have not written anything is because I couldn’t think of just one story to tell. Here is a brief list and now I have no excuses!
I could talk about being extorted by German Police for speeding, only to get out of it by Todd, Bill and Johnny signing autograph cards for the officers…
As a 15-year-old up and coming athlete, getting a ride from Ely to Minneapolis with National Team after a summer camp and surprised to see a pony keg in the back of the van…
On our last night in Lillehammer in 1994, our Norwegian bus driver fell asleep, went off the road and rolled our van…
After several 4th and 5th place finishes in 90’s and 2002, Johnny starting our run of medal performances beginning in 2003 through 2013. Many stories to be told about preparations, events, bets, and celebrations…
How the McDonalds tradition began thanks to Chris Gilbertson…
Strawberry Delight, The French Maid…probably better in person!
Hanging out with NHL players in 1998 in Nagano and happy we weren’t on the same floor as some of the US players after a big loss…
Holding my breath and laughing out loud at the same time when Kris Severson jumped only with boots and a helmet one summer day in Ely…
Stay tuned and I will use this a reminder that I owe a story or two each year!
